But Why?

But Why? You may ask.

WHY NOT?!!?
We got married young for a reason. So we could experience life together while we are young and physically able. We are both 21 years old. We don’t have any major careers that we can’t tear ourselves away from (sorry Leatherby’s Family Creamery… I think we can live without you). No kids. No church family that we have really connected with. No close-knit group of friends.  California State colleges are too unnecessarily expensive. And, we need a break from our rigid work schedule here in Sacramento (see About Us Page).

So we thought: Let’s get out of here!
 What we are looking for:
  • Some place beautiful
  • Some place warm
  • Some place calm and laid back
  • Some place with less crazy drivers ;-)
  • Some place where we know our way around
  • Some place we have friends or family to help us make the move

Anyone know the answer?!? MAUI, HAWAII incorporates all of the above! After a lot of prayer and open eyes for signs and smooth sailing, we decided to commit to making the move to paradise :)

But, but, what are you going to do about…
  • Jobs: Tiffany has almost 5 years of experience as a waitress and ice cream scooper. Jon has 4 years. We have both been involved in the fitness industry with Jon working at California Family Fitness as a personal trainer and Tiffany as a Fitness Instructor teaching Zumba. Most employers rather we come in for applications and interviews than doing it through email or online. So, we are heading over to Maui with faith that God will provide jobs for us. Our experience will most likely land us in one of the many restaurants in Maui, but we are open to anything.
  • Transportation: We are shipping our car over to Maui through Matson from the Oakland ship dock. Shipping a car takes 17 days so we will be without our own car for almost a month. There are a few local car rental places that rent to 21 year olds. For the first few days we plan on renting to help us get around and buy necessities. Then we’ll figure it out from there. Buy another used car? Buy a scooter/moped (yes, please!)? Use the bus system (not quite as dependable as a big city’s bus system)? We’ll see!
  • Our stuff? We are basically leaving everything in Sacramento. My sister and brother-in-law will be house sitting for us while we are gone. We will pack all of our clothes and essentials in our suitcases. If there is not enough room, we will ship them over to our place in Maui. The rest we will buy dirt cheap in Maui. We are in paradise, we don’t need nice things!!
  • Housing: My Aunt Candy and Uncle Nane live in West Maui in Napili. They rent out a little studio apartment room in their house. So we will be renting out that room. It is just one large room with a fridge, sink, and stove as the kitchen and a TV. And there is a bathroom with a shower. We stayed there on our last visit in July and it was perfect. Yes, it is small compared to what we are used to. But… who cares! We can’t beat the price and location in Maui, it is a very expensive place to live. So, our new “apartment” is a 5 minute walk to the beach ::sigh:: can’t get much better than that!
We are oh-so excited to just pick up and start a new life in Maui. We can’t wait to see what God has in store for us. Please be praying for a smooth transition, that we can find jobs fairly quickly, and that we don’t miss our Sacramento family too horribly.
Please subscribe to this blog, and you will get email alerts when we add a new post about our journey to Maui. I will also announce and post on Facebook when we’ve updated the blog. Stay tuned for stunning pictures, lessons on the Maui lifestyle, and our new life developments.
